I Drank CBD Coffee for a Week. Here’s What It Did to My Anxiety.

Cannabidiol (CBD), the compound in cannabis that doesn’t get you high, is popping up in everything from salads to sundaes.
According to studies, CBD may tout several therapeutic benefits, including decreasing anxiety , reducing seizures, and minimizing inflammation. As someone who lives with anxiety, I’m personally most interested in the anti-anxiety factor.
Although you can take CBD several ways, from vaping to gummies, one unique way to consume CBD is through coffee.
Proponents, like Craig Leivent, PharmD, co-owner of Flower Power Coffee Co. (a maker of CBD-infused coffee and edibles), say that the combination of CBD and coffee will give you the alertness of coffee but without the jitters.
But High Times magazine, which covers all things marijuana-related, thinks the idea was ridiculous. Their logic makes sense: If CBD is known to make you sleepy, wouldn’t it fight with the caffeine and leave you groggy?
Bonni Goldstein, MD, a California-based physician who specializes in cannabinoid therapy, is also skeptical. Especially when it comes to proper dosage and the temperature of coffee.
“Those who want to use CBD for serious medical conditions, such as seizure disorders or inflammation from autoimmune disorders, should not take CBD in this manner, as accurate CBD dosing is extremely important for efficacy in these types of illnesses,” Goldstein says.
“For a healthy person who wants to take CBD as a nutritional bonus or supplement, [dosing] issues are not as important.”
Goldstein also adds that a recent study looking at CBD stability in cannabis tea found that temperature affects CBD content, “meaning the milligram amount of CBD someone might require for his or her condition will not be consistent when delivered in a heated drink,” she explains.
But some people are really loving CBD coffee. Ian Ford, owner of Caffeine Underground, a coffee shop in Brooklyn, New York, says that since he started selling the brew, business is booming. It’s becoming so trendy, even Willie Nelson has launched his own CBD java.
Research shows that CBD has a host of potential benefits, including reducing anxiety. One of the newest CBD products on the market is CBD coffee. But wouldn’t the caffeine, which can make anxiety worse, override the anti-anxiety effect of the CBD? I tried drinking CBD coffee for five days to find out.
What are the benefits of mixing CBD and coffee?
In a nation where over 80% of its residents drink coffee, it’s no wonder that we run on caffeine and anxiety. What if the anxiety part could be mitigated, though? Cannabidiol (CBD) coffee could be just the ticket to calming those nerves while still getting you nice and buzzy.
There are a few properties to coffee that make it the drink of choice for so many. For one thing, the aroma actually has anti-anxiety properties. Its rich smell just makes us feel good, which can also help to relieve nervousness. Also, coffee is a natural antioxidant.
The benefits of CBD are also well known, though controversial. It’s understood that CBD is an anti-inflammatory, anti-seizure medicine that’s good at combating depression and anxiety. However, without other cannabinoids — even THC in low doses — CBD isn’t as effective. It still performs, just at a lower rate. Additionally, it needs to be taken consistently to really work any wonders.
CBD can be ingested in many ways besides dropping tincture into coffee or getting CBD fueled coffee pods or packages. There are vape pens, gummies, capsules, and tincture, to name just a few. But any of these methods can be implemented at the same time as a cup o’ Joe, thus also interacting with the coffee and mellowing it out a tad.
Really, CBD coffee is the ultimate combination (except CBD/THC coffee, that takes the cake!). For one thing, because CBD is known to be calming and even to make one sleepy, it combines with the caffeine to even you out, even after that third cup. In fact, if you’re drinking three cups of coffee, combining them with CBD or even a little weed is highly recommended.
To reiterate, if you are suffering from a serious medical condition, putting CBD isolate into your coffee isn’t the ultimate way to get your CBD therapy; you’ll need to consult with a CBD and entourage effect expert for that. However, if you’re healthy and simply want your morning fix, but are just a little on edge, CBD coffee is likely right up your alley. Wake up and smell the cannabinoid/caffeine combo!
