Introducing Tranquil: Kombucha with CBD

Breathe in, breathe out… It’s time to chill with Tranquil kombucha, featuring 25mg of CBD from Oregon-grown hemp in each 14 oz bottle. Explore three tasty options as you sip your way to a calmer day: Tranquil Herbs, Tranquil Berries, and Tranquil Ginger.

The flavor of the CBD is botanical and subtle, complimenting the kombucha well. If you already love Brew Dr.’s herbal Clear Mind flavor, berry-packed Superberry flavor, and zesty Ginger Lemon flavor, you’ll be pleased to find a very similar taste in the new CBD options.

Same great flavors, just more… chill.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in hemp and marijuana plants. Our CBD comes from organically cultivated craft hemp that is minimally processed. Not to brag, but that makes it pretty awesome.

What does “full spectrum” mean?

Full spectrum describes hemp extract that has been minimally processed to include the maximum amount of compounds present in the original plant. Some say this adds to CBD’s effectiveness, and we like to keep things as natural as possible.

Where do you source your CBD?

We’re excited to continue our partnership with East Fork Cultivars to source our CBD. East Fork is a USDA organic certified hemp farm in Southwest Oregon, our home state! They’re a rad group of people deeply committed to environmental responsibility, science-based education, and social justice. Oh, and their mascot is a llama — what’s not to love?

How much CBD is in Tranquil?

Brew Dr. Tranquil contains 25 mg of CBD in a 14 oz bottle.

What does CBD taste like?

East Fork’s craft hemp extract has a subtle piney, citrusy, and slightly nutty flavor to it, which complements our kombucha much like our botanicals. The hemp flavor is nuanced but never overpowering, and even serves to highlight other herbal, fruity, and botanical notes. In other words, we really dig it and we hope you do too.

Will it make me high?

CBD alone is considered non-intoxicating, meaning it won’t make you feel high. It affects everyone differently, but many people experience a calming or relaxing effect. Because our CBD comes from full spectrum hemp oil, it contains trace amounts of THC — the signature chemical compound in marijuana that has intoxicating effects. That said, the amount of THC is below the legal limit, and shouldn’t make you feel high unless you are especially sensitive to THC.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

If you are planning on taking a drug test, please consult your doctor, employer, or testing company before consuming CBD products. Because full spectrum hemp oil might contain trace amounts of THC, there is always a chance that a very sensitive test, or one that is not sophisticated enough to distinguish between different cannabinoids, could show a false positive — and we certainly don’t want that to happen to you!

What is CBD used for?

CBD is a non-intoxicating plant compound that many people use for gentle physical and mental relaxation. CBD is said to bring benefits such as anxiety-reduction, anti-inflammatory properties, and improved sleep. Of course, always check in with your doctor before taking CBD for what ails you. Contrary to what our name might suggest, Brew Dr. is not a doctor!

Is CBD legal?

The Farm Bill of 2018 made it federally legal to grow hemp and extract CBD; however, there are many location-specific restrictions involved with infusing CBD into food or drinks, so we are sticking with selling Tranquil in certain states for now.

The FDA is still studying CBD and has not approved it as a food additive or dietary supplement. Consumers must use their own discretion in consuming ingestible CBD products like Tranquil. For more information about the FDA’s views on CBD, see here.

This flavor tastes familiar—what is it?

It is familiar, you’re right! Tranquil was created using some of our favorite kombucha recipes: herbal Clear Mind, berry-packed Superberry, and zesty Ginger Lemon. Same great flavors, just more… chill.

What certifications does Tranquil have?

Brew Dr. Tranquil is currently not certified organic, non-GMO, or Kosher, but most of its ingredients are. East Fork Cultivars is a USDA organic certified hemp farm, but the CBD we sourced for Tranquil does not yet have these certifications — it will very soon!

Is Tranquil intended for everyone?

No. Tranquil is for adult use, and not for children. It is also not intended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Please reach out to your doctor if you aren’t sure if CBD is a good fit for you.

The statements above have not been evaluated by the FDA. Tranquil is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Kombucha cbd

As CBD products get more and more popular, I’ve been drawn to a lot of store-bought CBD drinks on the market. But since I make homemade kombucha, I wanted to try to make it myself, since store-bought CBD products are often expensive and many don’t even disclose how much CBD is in the product! You could be paying a premium for next to literally no CBD, just because the manufacturer decided to put a trace amount into this pricey, trendy bottle or can you’ve decided to buy.

Plus, even if a product discloses how much CBD they put into a bottle, many brands don’t put enough CBD for me personally to feel any effects. Everyone’s bodies and dosage requirements are different, so I wanted something that worked specifically for me, without breaking the bank.

If you’re not familiar with CBD, there are a lot of resources online you can check out to do more research on it. Here’s an FAQ from Hemplucid , my favorite CBD maker. But definitely do your own research to find trusted sources and diverse (fact- and science-based) opinions to determine for yourself whether or not CBD is for you.

Please note: I’m not making any medical claims about CBD or kombucha. These are just my own personal opinions and experiences. If you have any concerns or questions about your health, you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional. Adding CBD to homemade kombucha

There are a lot of CBD tinctures out there, but if you want to mix it into homemade kombucha, here are my tips:

Make sure you use a brand you trust. (I’ll share links to my recommendations below.)

Use a water-soluble CBD product, as most oil-based tinctures will not readily dissolve in liquids. (Watch my video for my full thoughts on this!)

Dose it properly depending on what you’re using it for. You’ll need to determine this for yourself, as everyone’s needs and bodies are different, but I generally use around 30-40 mg. per bottle to deal with my anxiety.

I like to add the CBD right into the bottle, right before sealing up the bottles for second fermentation. Or if you prefer, you can just add it directly into the kombucha after second fermentation, right before you drink it. I’ve found no difference in the efficacy of the CBD either way.

If you’re not already familiar with the process of making homemade kombucha, you’re in the right place! Check out my full step-by-step guide here . And find all my detailed brewer’s resources here to learn more. You can also find links to all my recommended brewing materials here if you’re just getting started or looking to up your home-brewed kombucha game.

I don’t recommend adding the CBD to the first fermentation vessel or letting it come into contact with the SCOBY since (like other flavorings, ingredients or additives) it may degrade the SCOBY in the long-term. Just add it during the second fermentation phase or right as you’re ready to serve/drink it.

My favorite CBD products

This option is fantastic and I’ve found it to be incredibly effective for helping me manage my anxiety. This has trace amounts of THC (below the federal legal limit, and is legal in all states).

Here’s an option if you want absolutely no THC (even trace amounts). I’ve found that it works just as well!

Other CBD products

Feel free to check out Hemplucid’s other products (they also have non-water-soluble tinctures and other CBD products that I love using), like this CBD body cream for aches and pains.

*Please note that I am a Hemplucid affiliate. I purchased and tested many CBD products myself before deciding which one was the most effective brand for me. I get a portion of Hemplucid’s profit if you decide to purchase my recommended products. It won’t cost you any more than you’d normally pay for the item! If you feel comfortable purchasing from these links, thank you! I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error and spent quite a bit of $$ to find reliable, effective products that can save us all money. I would never recommend anything I can’t vouch for in my own personal home brewing process. Otherwise, feel free to purchase from wherever you like. No hard feelings. You do what you’ve gotta do for your bucha! 🙂
